Baby Reese is Walking

March 29th, 2012

reesewalking2

It was snowing like crazy the morning of our shoot, a phenomenon almost hard to believe in this unseasonably early spring.  Brayden and I bundled up to go outside and catch one last, fleeting moment of winter but the moment the boots went on the snow went off.  It was kind of anti-climatic, Brayden made one snowball in his snowsuit and then decided it was time to go back inside!

But the kid is smart.  He knows the tradition that follows playing in the snow…  Hot chocolate, of course!  He was eager to earn and then show off his chocolate moustache.  What a handsome chocolate sipper, I liked these mug shots (knuck, knuck):

There are a few levels of crazy going on in this sequence.  It starts with a crazy face, which somehow got crazy hair, which then made his mother crazy, and then it was just back to plain ol’ crazy face.

crazyface

Just as we finished our sipping it was time to wake Reese from her nap.  She’s going through a bit of stranger anxiety, a completely understandable developmental thing most babies go through once they get mobile.  Its nature’s way of making sure that just because you can run away doesn’t mean you will.

When she got out of her crib and saw me with my camera, she crawled into Momma’s lap.  While I hated to be the cause of such trauma, this photo just sings right to my mommy heart.

It took some doing but eventually Reese warmed up just a little, or at least enough to show me her new skills!

And then she got a little flirty…

See this smile?

Wonder how we got it?  Sometimes I think the pictures of what’s going on behind me in a given shoot are every bit as revealing about a family as the shots in front of my lens.

I had such a lovely pseudo snow day with this family.  Its bittersweet, these one year shoots, because I know my photo journey comes to a pause until another big birthday or milestone arrives.  I’m so grateful to have photographed the first year of both of these children’s lives, its been a joy to watch Amy and Jeff grow into a family and then to watch their family grow.   Thank you, Amy and Jeff, for inviting me into it!  Here’s the slideshow and gallery to check out…

Baby Benjamin at 6 Months

March 26th, 2012

brighteyes

Part of the reason this shoot was so fun for me is that, between the crazy, bird-fuzz hair and the wide mouth grin, Benjamin reminds me a lot of my own son at 6 months.  Too.  Dern.  Cute.

I couldn’t possibly count the number of photographs I have taken of babies chewing on Sophies but it has never, ever been a deliberate shot nor has it ever been any less adorable:

Things you can overdo:

1) drinking

2) shopping the dollar bin at Target

Things you can never do too much:

1) tell  your kids you love them

2) kiss a baby

Or giving raspberries.  This photo is just so delicious!

I’m not sure there’s anything I love so much, visually speaking anyway, as little boy eyelashes:

I know there are people out there who don’t believe in the theory of evolution.  I just have a hard time believing these same people have raised baby boys!

Baby Merritt Turns One!

March 22nd, 2012

opener

When I heard this family was moving back to Richmond I might have done a cartwheel!  While I didn’t meet Jacqueline or Andy in RVA, our relationship feels like a friendship formed here: one where it seems we’ve known each other much longer than we actually have.  It all began not quite three years ago with Roscoe’s birth and its hard to believe its already been a year since this peanut, aka Merritt, was born:

He’s still got the stylin’ hair…

coolhair

Speaking of births, this is such a cool picture for me.   Merritt’s birthday brought up the topic so Jacqueline pulled out the photos from Roscoe’s birth to show him.  When I photograph a baby, I know that baby will eventually grow up and develop their own relationship with the photos.  To actually be there and watch Roscoe look through the pictures and process what was happening in them, to see him begin his understanding of that event vis-a-vis photographs, that was really an unexpected treat for me.

birthpics

This particular family has a very cool birthday celebration tradition.  There is a special restaurant outing followed by a trip to the toy store where the lucky birthday boy can choose his gift.  I was so excited to tag along this year, they decided to hit two well known Carytown spots: Bev’s ice cream and the infamous World of Mirth.

But before we go, let’s start at the new crib.  Merritt was feeling a little under the weather and Roscoe, all too aware of the fun outing to come, was hyped up and ready to go.  But still, there was such nice light in the playroom that I just had to give it a try…

Now I would never post a photo like this unless a) I knew Jacqueline wouldn’t kill me and/or b) I didn’t redeem myself later on in the shoot.  But what can I say, this one was so special I had to pick it out to show you:

picker

I just love the “tude” in this one:

brooding

Though these are probably more fair portraits of Roscoe at age two and a half!

roscoechair

We tried a few shots of the boys rough-housing on the bed but it proved a bit too much for Merritt:

bedbugs1

bedbugs2

So he opted for a nap instead.  After nap time, the family packed it up and off we went for… I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM.

With sprinkles…

I wasn’t sure how the boys’ striped shirts were going to play out within our locations but I don’t know if it could have been more serendipitous.  There were the stripes on the wall at Bevs…

And the crazy, colorful tile work outside of World of Mirth.

tiles

Inside, World of Mirth is indeed that.  I don’t remember what Merritt is looking at, but its awesome:

As for a nice, welcome back to Richmond family portrait, I think these were the most successful.  Not only is Bev’s the backdrop, but any Richmonder recognizes the reflection in the window as the scene across the street with the historic Byrd Theatre.  I love the crazy, surreal depth within the photo’s partitions.  And the ice cream eating dude in the upper right.

partitions1

Speaking of partitions, here I come with my art school mumbo jumbo again.  During nap time, Jacqueline told me about the challenges of dividing her time and attention between two small children, both of whom need 100%.  She wasn’t complaining, mind you, just reminiscing on the process of sorting it all through during Merritt’s first year.  The partition on the glass reminds me of that even in moments of division there is cohesion and togetherness, even in the midst of confusion where things seem ass backwards there’s humor and vibrant color.  (Neato mosquito, art nerd.)

partition

togetherness

But this one is a close second, just because of both the album cover nature of the photo and because of the way each parent has their attention targeted on the opposite kid.  It looks like organized chaos but its merely team work…

albumcover

We had to laugh because the most fun of the day happened right outside the toy store where the boys decided to play with their new acquisitions on the hard concrete, despite foot traffic coming in and out of the store.  It wasn’t the world’ most convenient place to play but it worked so well visually, who were we to stop it?

Welcome, Baby Keira!

March 16th, 2012

mattsarm

You’ve got to love a mom who lets her 4 year old daughter pick out not only her own outfit for a photo shoot but her new baby sister’s outfit as well.  Actually, I’ve loved Liz for awhile…. one of the best things about shooting weddings is the people we meet (Sam shot Liz and Matt’s wedding many moons ago) and one of the best things about living in RVA is that there are only two degrees of separation here.  Liz and I found friends in common and became good friends ourselves.  Despite our common Catholic upbringing, neither Liz nor myself have a mind towards convention, one of the many reasons why I hang with this gal as much as I can!

Tie dye with polka dot accents.  That’s what Ava chose.  And I just dig these two hippy chicks:

sisters3

hippyfeet

hippychicks

Ava also taught me about power princesses.  She doesn’t like regular princesses because all they do is wear dresses and look pretty.  She much prefers power princesses like She Ra who can look hot while wielding a sword to save the universe (my words, btw, not hers).   I am in complete agreement on her princess stance:

I know there are photographers out there who can get a power princess and three week old to smile angelically towards a lens but I’m almost rather proud that photographer isn’t me.  Well, this one ain’t bad… actually…

But this kind of thing is much more my speed:

There was a lot of silliness…

And some stillness in quieter moments.  Keira is just such a beautiful baby girl, she looks so much like her sis when she was born…

And I don’t know, maybe I’m biased, but I think Liz has a glow about her as a mother of two.

I love this family and I loved this shoot.  Here’s a slideshow that made me completely weepy and if you would like to check out the gallery, click here.  Congrats and welcome, sweet Keira…
