No-Longer-Baby Maya at Two and a Half

I find myself sighing each time I make the conscious decision to cut the word “Baby” out of a shoot title. Its like a tiny, bittersweet rite of passage, the shoot where I drop the word, “Baby” from the front of a child’s name.  I was on the fence at 18 months.  But here and now at two and a half, “Baby” needed the axe.

The reality is that as we swap slow, sentimental songs for contemporary pop in the slideshow, we also trade predictable shots for more spontaneous, high energy playfulness.  So its not an entirely bummer trade.  This was by far our most fun shoot yet as Maya showed me all the things she likes to do.  Her smiles and personality were off the charts this time around…

Our plan, initially, had been to take Maya to the family’s favorite hang out spot on the river and take pictures there.  Maya, however, didn’t want to leave.  At a certain point we realized that no amount of coaxing was going to change her mind, its funny how you start to need the buy-in once you drop the “Baby”.  But as it turned out, Maya knew best.  Its not the first time we’ve shot at home, all our shoots have been at home, but this was the first time that home really came through the photos.  If Maya grows up in this house, she will always recognize that front stoop with the red door, she’ll know the driveway where she learned to ride her bike and play hopscotch, she’ll know her garden, and she might recognize her playroom even though its likely to morph and change right along with her.  And if Maya doesn’t grow up in this house, Liz and Greg will be able to jog her memory of the place where it all began, their story as a family.  That might be why I’m especially attached to this photo of the family on their couch with Liz and Greg’s wedding chuppah behind them, mounted to the wall: it goes all the way back to the very first time I got to take Liz and Greg’s picture.  I love that they still hang out underneath it.

But back to the present day, and these days have been hot, have you ever seen a daintier ice cream sandwich eater?  I’m just sayin’.

When Maya got on her riding scooter she said, “Ok, I’m going to sewing class!”  (Anyone who knows Liz is cracking up right now.)  And Liz said, “OK, give me a kiss goodbye!”  So its not that we didn’t go anywhere…

Without further a-do, here’s the slideshow and gallery from our not-so-adventurous-adventure.  Sometimes, there’s just no need to venture.  There’s no place like home.
